Golf on the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida: Europe's Best Fairways Await
If you play golf and you have ever thought about buying a property in Spain, the stretch of Mediterranean coastline between Orihuela Costa and the Mar Menor should be at the very top of your list. Within a 60-kilometre corridor, you will find more than 25 championship courses designed by some of the biggest names in the game, including Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, and Pepe Gancedo. Add 320 days of sunshine a year and an average winter temperature of 18 degrees, and it is easy to see why serious golfers from Britain and Ireland keep coming back.
We have put together a full golf guide for the region, and below is a quick overview of what makes this part of Spain so special for golfers and property buyers alike.
Costa Blanca South: The Golf Triangle
The Orihuela Costa area, sometimes called the Golf Triangle, is home to eight excellent courses within easy reach of each other. Highlights include:
- Las Colinas Golf & Country Club: widely regarded as the finest course on the Costa Blanca South. Designed by Cabell B. Robinson and managed by Troon Golf, it has previously hosted European Tour Q-School and offers greens running at near PGA Tour standard. Green fees from €75.
- Villamartin Golf Club: a classic 1972 layout that hosted the 1994 Mediterranean Open, with green fees from €40.
- La Finca Golf Resort, Algorfa: rated in the top 15 courses in Spain by Golf Digest, designed by Pepe Gancedo. Green fees from €45.
- Lo Romero Golf: a modern course with a famous island-green 18th hole inspired by TPC Sawgrass. Green fees from €40.
- Las Ramblas, Real Club de Golf Campoamor, La Marquesa, and Vistabella round out a strong local lineup.
Murcia and the Costa Calida: The Nicklaus Trail
Cross into Murcia and the quality keeps coming. The Jack Nicklaus Golf Trail alone gives you six championship courses, and La Manga Club needs no introduction:
- La Manga Club: three championship layouts, a Seve Ballesteros redesign, and the official winter base of the German PGA. Green fees from €60.
- El Valle Golf Resort: a dramatic desert valley course with rocks, caves, and waterfalls. The standout of the Nicklaus Trail.
- Alhama Signature Golf: at 7,572 yards, the longest course on the Trail.
- Hacienda del Alamo: eight lakes and 84 bunkers across 7,400 yards.
- Roda Golf & Beach Resort: just 1.5km from Mar Menor, palm-lined fairways and lake holes.
When to Play
The peak season runs from October through April, with temperatures between 16 and 22 degrees and firm fairways in excellent condition. This is also when northern European golfers fill the courses and rental properties book up quickly. May and September offer a quieter, slightly warmer alternative. Summer golf is possible but best kept to early mornings given the heat.
Golf Property: The Investment Case
Properties close to the best courses consistently outperform the broader market in both capital growth and rental yield. Golf-adjacent homes generate year-round bookings, including the winter months when non-golf properties often sit empty. Entry points vary considerably:
- Villamartin and Ciudad Quesada: apartments from around €120,000, villas from €250,000.
- Campoamor and Roda Golf: apartments from around €140,000 to €195,000.
- La Manga Club: apartments from €195,000, villas from €500,000.
- Las Colinas: villas from €495,000, with larger properties above €800,000.
Gross rental yields of 6 to 11% are achievable for well-positioned golf community properties.
